Choosing Torbay Hospital

Choose and Book
Torbay Hospital has been collaborating with the rest of the local NHS to offer patients the opportunity to "Choose and Book", giving patients the chance to speak directly to the hospital and book a convenient date when they need a hospital appointment. South Devon was one of the first parts of the NHS to start phasing in this new booking system.

Torbay Hospital in South Devon enjoys views inland to the moors and over the holiday resort of Torquay (on the English Riviera) to the sea.

The hospital has been designated as one of just 5 flagship Centres of Innovation nationally because of its excellent track record - for example, it has one of the most successful Day Surgery Units in the country and runs the regional training centre for consultants from across the NHS for the early detection of bowel cancer.

Because of its success in reducing waiting times in many specialties, patients are travelling from neighbouring areas to Torbay Hospital for earlier treatment. The hospital's service for stroke patients has been ranked in the top few nationally.

In the last few years, the £1.5 million Torbay Cardiac Centre has opened and a £5 million investment programme in cancer services has been completed. The Child Health services are leading the way in teenage care and the Maternity Service supports one of the highest home birth rates in the country. Torbay Hospital has been a Beacon site for thrombolysis, pioneering pre-hospital clot-busting treatment for heart attack patients with the ambulance service.

Torbay Hospital has a track record of good performance. It was given a top three-star rating for three years running ahead of the introduction of the Healthcare Commission's annual health check, which judges the quality of care as "good".

Recent investments have been made in upgrading ward facilities and operating theatres. We are embarking on a major phased development and modernisation of Torbay Hospital, starting with an expansion of our Accident & Emergency facilities. A new £5 million centre for Education, Innovation and Research is being built on the hospital site and due to open in 2009.
